I have — most of it is still on the ground. If it's leaking it's good to go.

Why not a change of perspective? Think of it as several quarts UP.

Just changed the oil on my miata about 3 weeks ago. So nice and squeaky clean!

It's a manuel, so no automatic trans fluid.

Oil level is good. I burn about 1.5 qt per year. Not bad.
My wife's old 1999 Mazda Protege (1.8L) burned 0.0000 qt per year with 150,000 mi on the odometer. Unbelievable. Oil analysis showed that the (synthetic) oil could go 1.5 years without changing before the total base number fell to zero. Metals were still low, however. The owner's manual suggested oil changes every six months.

Of course. as a Lada owner, my Sunday afternoon ritual is to make sure ALL the fluids are still where they belong...

I'm not sure, I checked it on uneven ground, but there was still oil on the dipstick.
New motor is a champ.

I know i'm just fucking with you. That dipstick looks dry though you should pour some oil down the 710 chute

Does your 5.0 use any oil? 8qts isn't it?
Suprisingely my STi doesn't use any oil. Nor coolant which one as would expect. Rotella T6 ftw. Then again I only go 3k mile intervals and don't dog the piss out of it at every red light.

Really?
It was black on my old ford and is yellow on Mrs Noise's ford
all my other cars have had sticks so I can't speak for any other brand

Well, it was red on all the automatic Corvettes I test drove before mine. I thought it made sense, since the fluid is red, just like fresh oil has a sort of golden-yellow hue to it.
Alas, the rest of my experience with autos is relegated to cars with "sealed" transmissions...which are one of the worst jokes in the automotive industry.

Damn. Thats, highly, intuitive...
I'm a ford fan in general but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that kind of sensibility was lost on the malaise era fords I'm familiar with.
sealed transmissions hurt me right in the soul

I have used the BMW electronic dipstick, don't know how accurate it is, but I like it. They should've put a real dipstick in addition to the electronic one, so that you can visually check the condition of the oil. I see that as an issue if you're buying a used Exx BMW.

That's correct, 8 qts. It has 1,800 miles and has never consumed any oil. Changed the oil @ 1,000 miles because of break in.
Talking about Subarus, I've read very bad things about the Subaru FB20 on the non WRX/STI Imprezas. Many people say they have heavy oil consumption, even in normal driving. We found that unacceptable, hence why we didn't buy a Subaru XV.

The rattling sound almost exactly at 7:00? I'm not sure. Mine's never made that noise. Although it looks like there might be something spinning loose about where the transfer case sits, as if a branch or weeds or something got twisted up in the layshaft when they got it stuck, and is slapping against the floor pan. Or it could always be some form of mechanical damage... I'd imagine a broken flywheel could make a similar noise, which could also then be responsible for the whirring sound of the starter motor not properly engaging at the end of the clip.

I completely agree about being able to visually inspect it. Luckily mine never stays in long enough to worry because of all the track use but there must be a ton of dipstick-free BMWs out there with gross 15,000mi oil. Yuck.

2004 Jaguar XJR. Volvo S80 V8. Oil analyses say that once-per-year changes are more than enough. The family averages about 12,000 miles per year on each. Oil consumption and emissions, and overall performance indicate that they are in very good health.

Checked this morning, about half a litre down and getting brownish instead of yellow-gold. Last change was about 2300 miles ago

Yes - I've still not recovered from my past couple cars and even though this one doesn't use oil noticeably, I still check it all this time (uses no more than a pint in 4k, my last DD would do a pint in 1k, and the one before that, well, it took almost a quart per tank (16g) of gas...).
That said, my oil is starting to turn as well, with about 3k on it. There's also the issue of the nylon floating around in it...

Haha well not squeaky (aside from my rotors, but that is a separate issue) but certainly clean Mobil 1 synthetic.
